Die Statue steht unweit des Gateway of India (dem symbolischen Eingangstor Indiens), denn Swami Vivekananda repräsentiert die sprirituelle Seite des modernen Indiens. Er war Schüler von Ramakrishna und wurde bekannt, als er beim ersten Weltkongreß der Religionen im Jahre 1893 als Vertreter des Hinduismus in Chicago auftrat. Er wird im modernen Indien sehr verehrt, da er auch für soziale Reformen eintrat. Vivekananda war mehr ein Mann der Tat:"Jede Pflicht ist heilig, und Hingabe an die Pflicht ist die höchste Form der Anbetung."
